MASON.
YORK STONE, SLATE, RECONSTRUCTED STONE,
PORTLAND STONE, GRANITE, AND MARBLE.

STONE, GRANITE AND MARBLE.

 

All stone to be of the best quality, free from all imperfections and to be obtained from the best beds of quarries approved by the Architect.

 

All stone is measured nett.

 

All stone to be worked to detail drawings and to be laid on its natural bed when in the work.

 

All stone to be hoisted and fixed, set and bedded, jointed and pointed at various levels in mortar composed of cement and white sand 1-2 or cement and stone dust 1-2.

 

All stone to be rubbed on exposed faces except as otherwise described and cleaned down on completion.

 

Case up and protect all stone as necessary or directed.

Extracts from detailed specifications:

 

YORK STONE:

    to be "Silex" York Stone obtained from Messrs. Brookes, Ltd., Halifax, or other approved firm:

        263 Feet 3" Paving slabs in square about 30" x 30" laid in panels between granite margins

        16 Feet Run. 5" x 4" Curb rebated for grating

        5 Feet Run. 30" x 6" Solid step

        7 Feet Run. 30" x 6" Ditto in scantling length

STAIRCASES:

   All Staircases steps and landings except where otherwise described to be fair to treads risers and soffittes, jointed together with

   birdsmouthed rebated joints finished with V joint on soffit and with slightly arrised nosings.

SLATE MASON:

    34 Feet 1" Polished slate slab shelf stove enamelled white on top holed and countersunk and screwed with brass screws to framing:

          33' 0" Run. Fair back edge

          4' 0" Run. Double rebated joint in coloured cement

          19' 0" Run. Polished rounded edge stove enamelled with 2" return

RECONSTRUCTED STONE:

    to be Reconstructed Portland with fine hard finish on all exposed faces to be obtained from a firm approved by the Architect

    and to include for all toggle joints.

PORTLAND STONE:

    Builder to point up 523 Feet Asphalte in cement where turned into rebate or chase; cut out for bronze letter slip in 4½" Ashlar

    and fix only in cement and make good

GRANITE:

    Builder to supply cement mortar 1-3 to fixers in fixing 990 Feet Cube of Granite

    Builder to Point to edge of lead damp course in Granite Plinth - 264 Feet; cut out in Granite Plinth for fresh air inlet to drain and buil

    in and make good

PAVINGS TO AREA:

    Tender to include for attendance and facilities as described in General Preliminaries to Specialist in laying

     200' 0" super footpath paving

MARBLE MASON:

    Tender to include for attendance and facilities to specialist as described in General Preliminaries in fixing:

    146 Treads and risers

    226 Feet Super. Paving to Landing

    Entrance Hall paving 417 Feet Super

    Lobbies No. 1 and 2 do. 501     "       "

    Corridors No. 1 and 2 do. 1021 "       "

    Ante Rooms No. 1 and 2 do. 283 "     "

    Marble Dadoes 9' 3" high:-

        Entrance Hall 48' 6" x 8' 0" on plan

        Lobbies No. 1 and 2 each 13' 6" x 14' 0" do.

        Corridors No. 1 and 2 each 61' 6" x 8' 0" do.

        Ante Room No. 1 one wall 28' 6" long

        Ditto No. 2. one wall 9' 6" long

    Linings and Finishings to Hall size 52' 2" x 66' 6" on plan and 24' 10" high

    Unload, store, protect, hoist and fix only the following cut and pin brackets and make good:-

        1 Bronze tubular rail 6' 0" long with 3 brackets to balcony coping

Tender to allow for attendance at and interference due to Stone Laying Ceremony. Provide all  necessary platforms, gangways, handrails, barriers, etc. Generally clean up and tidy up to give a presentable appearance to the works. Lay temporary ash, etc., pavings as required to make site clean and suitable.
