Head Office - Accounts Department
Payslips etc
Examples of documents produced by
Accounts Department re Staff Salaries
Until the Salary system was computerised in 1970, monthly payslips were produced manually as shown by this example for a Junior Clerk
in 1956
These examples show the different formats used when payment was included for overtime worked at the Annual Balance. The Payslip for
April 1970 is formatted for a system where net pay was credited to an account within the Accounts Department, instead of a bank account
at a branch. A space at the bottom of the slip allows for any undrawn salary from previous months to be shown as 'Balance of Salary
Account' - however, most staff drew all of their salary on pay day.
Below: the first payslip produced by Birmingham Corporation's computer system. Monthly amendments to the basic details held on the
computer were submitted manually by Accounts Department's staff to the Corporation's Computer Centre, and the payslips plus summary
total reports etc collected a few days later. This example was produced in September 1970, a few months prior to decimalisation of
the UK's currency.
Subsequent to the Bank becoming a Trustee Savings Bank (TSB) in 1976, administration of the payroll was transferred to the TSB system.
This payslip was produced shortly after the Birmingham Municipal TSB amalgamated with TSB of the Midlands.
At this date (January
1980) the staff of the former Birmingham bank were still members of the Local Government Superannuation Scheme. TSB staff were entitled
to benefit from a non-contributory superannuation scheme so received a supplement to their basic pay to match the amount of Company
Pension deducted. In due course, staff transferred to the non-contributory TSB scheme.
