This branch in Birmingham's city centre (just off Corporation Street) was opened on March 15th 1966, by Sir Miles Thomas, DFC, the Chairman of the National Savings Committee. To suit the convenience of shop and office workers, the branch opened at 08:30 on Mondays to Fridays, and 09:30 on Saturdays. The hours of business were therefore:
   - Monday to Thursday .... 08:30 to 15:00
   - Friday ............................ 08:30 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 19:00
   - Saturday ........................ 09:30 to 12:00

 

The Bank's then General Manager (Mr S A Guy) was later quoted as saying: "We felt that the redevelopment of Birmingham was tending partly to isolate Head Office from the city's shopping area and it was a long way for many of our customers to come. The City branch has been very successful as has the early morning opening."

 

The Martineau Square premises were further utilised by transferring the Head Office department that handled Standing Orders and Credit Transfers from Broad Street. The work of these two sections was handled in office space above the branch's ground floor banking hall.

 

The above hours were revised from July 1st 1969 when Saturday opening was discontinued in the banking industry generally. The revised hours were:
   - Monday to Wednesday .... 08:30 to 15:00
   - Thursday ............................ 08:30 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 19:00
   - Friday ................................. 08:30 to 17:00

 

The hours were further amended from September 1st 1973:
   - Monday to Wednesday .... 08:30 to 15:30
   - Thursday ........................... 08:30 to 19:00
   - Friday ................................ 08:30 to 15:30
