The trenches to be excavated in all cases to allow a space of 9" on either side of the collars of the pipes when properly laid.
All
depths stated are measured below formation level as defined in Excavator.
Before any ramming is commenced the pipes are to be
covered with at least one foot of dry material well packed under and around the pipes.
Where drains are laid on concrete pockets
are to be formed for the collars and joints by sinking bricks into the concrete and withdrawing same when concrete begins to set.
The
cement and sand to be as described in "Concretor".
The bricks to be hard Black Country Brindled bricks.
The mortar to be
mixed in the proportion of one part cement to three parts sand as described in "Bricklayer".
The prices of all excavations for
manholes, sumps, etc, to include for all necessary planking and strutting, propping and supporting the sides of excavations and adjacent
walls etc.
All gas, water or other pipes and electric cables uncovered during the excavations to be carefully maintained,protected
and supported; make good any damage that may be done and leave all perfect.
No drains pipes or connections shall be covered until
they have been properly tested and finally approved by the Architect and Sanitary Authority.
EARTHENWARE DRAINS.
All pipes
to be best quality salt glazed socketted drain pipes of approved manufacture.
All fittings and appliances to be best quality
salt glazed stoneware of approved manufa,cture.
The drains to be caulked with yarn and jointed and filleted with neat cement;
if no yarn is used the joints must be carefully finished smooth inside and wiped out.
The prices to include for all excavations,
chasing bottoms for sockets, returning, filling in and carefully ramming and carting away surplus and for all necessary planking and
strutting, propping and supporting the sides of excavations and adjacent walls and for keeping free of water and grubbing up any old
foundations, disused drains, roots, etc, that may be met with.
CAST IRON DRAINS.
The cast iron drain pipes to be of
approved make coated inside and out with Dr Angus Smith's solution true in line and section the joints made thoroughly tight with
gaskin and caulked with molten lead.
The weights per 9' 0" length of pipe are to be not less than as follows:

All pipes must be laid in perfectly straight lines and to accurate falls. Where drains cross the space between is to be packed
with cement concrete.

and carefully ramming and carting away surplus, and for all necessary planking and strutting, propping and supporting the sides of
excavations and adjacent walls and for keeping free of water and grubbing up any old foundations, disused drains, roots, etc, that
may be met with.
The cast iron drain pipes are measured nett lengths as laid and the prices must include for all short and special
lengths and shapes and also for all patterns and all cutting to length.
Allow for twice testing all drains and appurtenances
by water test once before any filling in is done and again after filling in is complete and leave sound and watertight to the satisfaction
of the Architect and Authorities.
