BRICKLAYER, PAVINGS AND
PATENT HOLLOW BLOCK FLOORS
The common bricks to be of Birmingham make, approved, hard, sound, square, well burnt, even, uniform in shape, free from lime, cracks, stones, and other defects, giving a clear ring when struck.
 
All bricks to be well wetted before laying and all bricks for faced work to be handled all through from yard to laying, the visible arrises must be undamaged.
 
The whole of the brickwork to be laid to Old English bond, bats only to be used as closers, seven courses to two feet. All joints to be filled in solid as the work proceeds every course, (or buttering will be insisted on). Horizontal joints levelled round and kept level, perpends true, faces plumb. No part to be more than 3' 0" above another at one time.
 
The sand to be as described in "Concretor" and fine screened.
 
The cement to be as described in "Concretor".
 
The lime to be best quality blue lias lime finely ground, to be obtained from an approved manufacturer.
 
The cement mortar to be composed of one part of cement to three parts of sand and where described as "in cement" to be one part of cement to two parts of sand.
 
The lime mortar to be composed of one part blue lias lime to three parts sand.
 
Hand made mortar to be well mixed together on a wooden platform by turning over twice dry, the water then added through a fine rose and again turned over until an even mixture is obtained.
 
Machine made mortar to be mixed in an approved mixing machine. The lime or cement and sand to be well mixed together dry and the water added after thorough incorporation through a fine rose and the whole thoroughly worked until an even mixture is obtained.
 
The mortar to be mixed in suitable quantities to ensure being used fresh and to avoid initial set.
 
A proper stage to be provided to receive the mortar when made.
 
Clean down facings, make good putlog and other holes, and point as required.
 
All brickwork laid in seasons liable to frost to be covered up at night with felt, sacking or other approved non-conducting material.
 
The building is nearly entirely steel framed, the brickwork in general being in panels between stancheons and joists at varying levels, and prices must include for all straight cutting to top of panels and for any pinning up and wedging to underside of steelwork or concrete casings.
 
Allow for any additional setting out required owing to walls being built off concrete floors, cased beams, etc.
 
Allow for any extra scaffolding necessary on account of walls commencing at different levels.
 
The brickwork is divided into two classes "below" and "above" ground floor level, the dividing line being the general ground floor level of the building irrespective of its relation to the present ground level which is approximately 12' 0" below ground floor level.
 
The total height of the building is 45' 0" above ground floor level which is 3' 0" above finished ground level at front and 12' 0" above finished ground level at rear of the site.
 
The brickwork is to be executed in conjunction with stone dressings and facings and prices are to include for all cutting to bond and straight vertical joints between brick and stone facings.
 
Build in letter box 2' 0" x 3' 0" solid in 15" wall (brickwork left out and built up afterwards)
 
Build in night safe about 3' 0" x 3' 0" x 2' 6" solid in blue bricks elsewhere measured (brickwork left out and built up afterwards)
 
Build in end of 4"x 2" three fence posts about 12" long solid in 9" wall faced with picked common facing bricks both sides and cut and fit blue brick on edge coping around same and make good.
 
Cut out in existing 18" boundary wall 11' 3" x 5' 6" for gate opening build up jambs with picked common splay bricks with turnouts top and bottom and make good coping both sides.
 
Blue brick base 2' 6" x 2' 0" x 7" high for gas meter bull nosed on front edge and two returns and with two verticalrounded corners.
Ditto 4' 0" x 2' 0" x 7" high for water meter bull nosed on front edge and one return and with one vertical rounded corner.
