Branches

When the Bank commenced on September 1st 1919, only six offices (Head Office; Aston; Handsworth; Lozells; Small Heath; and Sparkbrook) were open to depositors on a full-time basis.

At the end of the first trading period (to March 31st 1920), the Bank had twenty offices, of which eleven were open on a part-time basis.

During the period  that the Bank existed (to November 20th 1979), offices were opened in 83 locations - of these, 46 were initially opened on a part-time basis.

Part-time opening was either conducted on certain days only or was restricted to late night hours on certain evenings only - these latter offices were known as ‘Evening Branches’, and were a preferred method of testing a particular location for levels of demand for the Bank’s services.

Passbooks issued to depositors at Evening Branches had the special Hours of Business printed on the inside front cover - as shown by the example for Alum Rock branch (right). When the branch was converted to a full-time basis, a sticker was used to cover the out-of-date opening hours.

The following table illustrates the outcome for locations initially opened on a part-time basis. The table indicates whether a branch was initially opened Part Time (PT) or as an Evening Branch (EB), although that initial designation may have changed shortly afterwards. Details of days and hours of business are given in individual branch pages.
